2-Hour Rolling Tune-Up
Don't let an inability to roll hold you back! Rolling is one of the essential kayaking techniques that can make paddling a joy by lessening the fear and hassle of swimming in whitewater. Our instructors are American Canoe Association (ACA) certified and have many years of experience teaching rolling to a variety of students. Their kayaking tips can help you move from practicing hip snaps to learning the paddle motions to rolling in a logical progression.
Our low student-to-instructor ratio assures that you will receive the personalized attention our instruction program is known for. Our flexible instruction method is accommodating to people with different body types and makes learning fast and enjoyable.
On these clinics we work on our flatwater skills to improve our basic paddling techniques as well as improving students rolls. We will warm-up your day in the flatwater pool below the first rapid on the Fifebrook section of the Deerfield River. To maximize your time on the water registration for this clinic will be at the Fifebrook put-in/turnaround area.
This season we will be offering 2-Hour Rolling Tune-Up one Saturday per month June through September. Use the availability widget below to find individual clinic dates.
Want to do this course as a private, semi-private or with your own group? Check out our information on custom clinics and when you're ready we will help set-up a great course on your dates.
Price: $65.00 per person includes all equipment and instruction.
What To Expect & How to Prepare
Goal of the clinic
Work with those who already have a roll, to perfect their technique and apply it to moving water and whitewater situations.
Who should take this clinic?
These clinics are for novice to intermediate paddlers who want to improve their roll. Our minimum age for this clinic is 14.
What will be covered?
We will teach the roll that works best for you. Most people will learn either the c-to-c and/or the modified sweep roll (and any other variations students want to try) in the flatwater below the first rapid on the Deerfield River Fifebrook Section. We concentrating on ensuring proper fit in the boat, maximum use of the hips and minimum reliance on the paddle. Depending on the level and desires of the group, we can also work on more warm-up drills or move to the current for work on rolling in real river situations.
A Typical Paddling Day
Your clinics registration will meet onsite at the Fifbrook Put-in/Unload parking lot at 9:00 AM. The clinic will start on time, so please be prompt. Complimentary hot drinks will be available upon your arrival. Your clinic will come to an end at 11:00 AM.
Because these are instructional clinics, your instructors will be encouraging you to push your physical and mental limits. With rolling this often means flipping a lot in cold water and sometimes swimming.
The number of students in your clinic may vary. We have a maximum student-to-instructor ratio of 4:1 and a maximum clinic size of 12 students.
You will be spending 2 hours in your boat. To prepare you will want to stretch your thighs hamstrings and torso (back, stomach, shoulders and neck). If you increase your flexibility, you will have more efficient strokes, and you will be more comfortable in your boat.
What should I wear?
The Deerfield River is always cool, regardless of the time of year or air temperature. When packing your paddling clothes, please plan accordingly. Our clinics will run rain or shine.
