Kayak Academy

After School Kayak Academy

Zoar Outdoor will teach a Spring whitewater kayaking course for kids in grades 7 to 12.  Outdoor adventure sports are a great way to build self confidence, stay in shape, and have fun!  This sports program will emphasize safety at all levels.  The program will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The last class is a full day river run (9:30 am to 4:45 pm)

During the kayak clinic, we will concentrate on teaching whitewater skills on a section of the Deerfield River in Charlemont, and progress towards paddling a 6 - 8 mile section of class I - III whitewater.  Students will learn the skills necessary to confidently handle their boat and themselves in a whitewater environment.  Zoar Outdoors' instruction staff is certified by the American Canoe Association.

Registration is limited, so get your registration in early to guarantee a spot.

Please register online or call Zoar Outdoor directly before the registration deadline of April 1st.  If you are signing up online, please make sure you contact Zoar Outdoor for information about getting the student questionnaire and waiver form.  The first day will be April 9th and the full day (last day) is May 16th.

The cost is $220.00 per person.  Full payment and all registration forms must be completed and signed by parents before students can participate in the first meeting of the program. Students will need:

1) Student questionnaire form to be filed out by the student.

2) Liability waiver signed by student and parent.  No student will be allowed to participate without a signed liability waiver.

What To Expect & How to Prepare

Goal of the clinic:

To introduce kids around ages 14-18 to the sport of kayaking in a kid-oriented way.

Who should take the clinic:

We offer two levels of the Kayak Academy, so this program is fitting for both experienced whitewater paddlers and beginners.  No experience is needed but it is important to be comfortable in the water and able to swim.

What will be covered:

During the kayak clinic, we will concentrate on teaching whitewater skills on a section of the Deerfield River in Charlemont, and progress towards paddling a 6 - 8 mile section of class I - III whitewater. Students will learn the skills necessary to confidently handle their boat and themselves in a whitewater environment. Zoar Outdoors' instruction staff is certified by the American Canoe Association.  Because these are instructional clinics, your instructors will be encouraging you to push your physical and mental limits.

Students choosing this program should be active, adventurous and comfortable in the outdoors. To prepare you will want to stretch your thighs hamstrings and torso (back, stomach, shoulders and neck).
