A Typical River Run in Zoar Gap
A river run on the Zoar Gap section of Massachusetts’ Deerfield River makes for the perfect follow-up after participating in one of our Beginner or Intermediate kayaking or canoeing clinics. We spend the day enjoying the river, while gaining experience kayaking or canoeing on New England’s best Class II summer whitewater run. Our river runs are now instructional! Our goal of the river run is allow students a chance to practice the skills they have previously learned and gain valuable feedback on their current technique. We share some of our favorite places and activities to help build skills while not overloading students with more new material to learn. It’s a great way to solidify your current skills!
The Fifebrook section of the Deerfield River benefits from consistent dam releases making for a predictable and long summer paddling season. We often start the day with a review of material that students know and have some opportunity to practice skills and warm-up in flatwater. Fifebrook is known for it’s friendly learning environment and super fun class II rock gardens. For those looking to push into class III, the optional Zoar Gap rapid is the perfect New England test piece. Let us take care of the logistics so you can enjoy spending a day on the river.

This run is for kayakers or canoeists who are comfortable in Class II and want a chance to gain experience or paddle a new river under the expert leadership of qualified instructors.

You will spend somewhere between four to five hours in your boat. To prepare, stretch your thighs, hamstrings, and torso (back, stomach, shoulders, and neck). If you increase your flexibility, you will have more efficient strokes, and be more comfortable in your boat.

Clothing/Gear:
While some of the flatwater areas we use are quite warm in June, July, and August, the Deerfield River is always cool, regardless of the time of year or air temperature. When packing your paddling clothes, please plan accordingly, especially if you are coming early or late in the season (April, May, September, and October). Our clinics run rain or shine.
Wear items such as:
- synthetic long underwear, garments made of polypropylene, Capilene, or some polyester/spandex blend
- fleece or wool socks
- bathing suit
- fleece or wool jacket/sweater (early/late season or if you tend to chill easily)

If you own your own equipment, we suggest you use it in the clinic to get used to its quirks.
We provide a catered picnic-style lunch on all our full day clinics.

We do not use nuts in our food, but can not guarantee that the ingredients in our meals do not contain nuts or other food allergens. If you have food allergies or other special dietary needs, we strongly suggest you bring your own bag lunch in non-glass containers and we will pack it with the other lunches on your trip.
